Burnt Cobalt

February 29th, 2012

Looking at this photo post from yesterday has me almost suffocating when considering the weather today. As I type this I am currently beating this yucky, humid, too warm for February (although it is the very last day- if you want to consider this an actual February day since it only comes around every four years) weather by wearing shorts (sequined) and a breathable top. Southern Louisiana weather is the worst!

Yesterday morning I was cozy in this gear and slowly started to shed a few layers as the humid yuckiness creeped on.

This is me getting frustrated at my lack of photog skills when the AUTO program decides not to focus for who knows why. ”Ahhhh! Someone help!” is what I wanted to yell, but I didn’t. Instead, I decided to learn myself and watch a few more photog instructional videos, which helped a little but also added more confusion.

Like I mentioned…the layers started to decrease as the humidity started to increase, beginning with the boots being exchanged for my more breathable DIY Mary Janes.

DIY: Geometric Mary Janes

February 28th, 2012

Since I’m moving and all, I have been in crazy get-rid-of-everything-I-don’t-use mode, which has been very liberating at times but sometimes panicky when I realize a craft I want to do and I had the perfect item to do it with but wait…”where is that item?! oh, in one of those 7 huge trash bags that I brought to Goodwill!” Then instead of giving up on the craft I go out and buy something similar that I just gave away to satisfy my DIY side. This is NOT one of those instances. I stopped just shy of throwing these Mary Janes out and thought and thought about what I could do to make them wearable in my wardrobe again. For some reason I have lost taste in the Mary Jane look but I love the heels on these. So an update came to me….somehow adhere leather over the straps, use brown to break up the dark mundane black and use a skewed version of the, oh, so popular geometric shape of the moment, the triangle! So that I did and this is how it came out…

1. cut leather into desired shape and length after measuring completely over strap and leaving enough room for it to reach your velcro on your buckle side. 2. glue leather onto strap starting at the tip ending just at the strap holes. (use a strong bonding glue so it doesn’t fall off in the middle of your work meeting and your are embarrassed bc your leather DIY strap is tripping you up bc you decided to go cheap-o on the glue-o.) after letting your strap dry, you then need to glue the velcro onto the shoe and leather after matching them up while the shoe is on your foot and strapped up so you can see at which angle your velcro so be adhered. After letting it completely dry  get prepared to… 3. wear!

Now, you may be thinking that these will probably get worn less in it’s updated state than it had in it’s original form. And you may be right just for the fact that I am moving to a city where heels like these are pretty much impractical unless I plan on carrying a massive tote to lug them in not putting them on until I reach my fabulous destination or plan on striking it rich to be chaffered around the Big Apple similar to Chuck, but that is the ONLY reason. I absolutely love their weird, outspoken, new form and I hope you do also!!

Dreaming of NYC events to wear these to,

Twila

Wide Legs

February 26th, 2012

Man, oh, man, I have been a bad keeper of this blog lately. My list of to dos has been growing and my days left in Louisiana have been shrinking which makes for a bad mixture when trying to include time for blogging. Although I feel like I have tons to do before the uproot, I am super excited about it! Brooklyn here we come (in two weeks)!!!! No more grassy backgrounds…city streets, good eats and tons of adventure!!!!

DIY Fringe Scarf

February 21st, 2012

Hello! Hope the beginning of your week is going well. I had a craft day last week and started doing a few different DIY crafts but then ran out of time during my busy traveling week to post them. Here is one of them!

I am a big fan of scarves because of their ability to add color and dimension to a drab ensemble but lately I have been avoiding most of mine because of my recent neck pains. Making one out of a lightweight fabric seemed to be a logical solution while also making it long and wide for coziness for the remaining chilly months. So along came the DIY for the LINEN FRINGE SCARF!

This particular scarf pattern and fabric was chosen by one of my sewing students. I loved the finished product so I decided to share it!

1. cut the fabric 23.75 inches wide and 93 inches long. (we bought 1 and 2/3  yds of fabric and cut two strips of 23.75 inches wide then connected it by using a felted seam. this saved on cost of fabric and waste.)   2. start pulling threads on all side edges to create the fringe until you have reached the desired length of fringe. sew along the top of the fringe to secure the fabric from fraying further. 3. wear it with other stripes or another pattern!

Let me know how your creation turns out!

Brown and Black Stripes

February 13th, 2012

Busy, busy, busy is my adjective of choice to describe these past few weeks. I am in the midst of finishing a long to do list before my move up north (to NYC!!). So tons of things to do. But I took a mini break to do a blog post since I hadn’t updated in a long long while. Disregard the pony bottom in background.
